Secret Gadgets and Gizmos

Spy Tools

While spies may use advanced technology like night vision, tiny hidden cameras and microphones, or even jet packs, the most common spy tools are items are every day items you may have around the house.

Cell Phones

Cell phones can be a great spy tool. They often have cameras and microphones capable of recording evidence. Spies may start recording audio or video on their phone from a distance, or if the spy is discreet, from right next to a target. Additionally, phones have access to the Internet which allows spies to check in with their handlers, send secret information quickly, and communicate with other spies.

Invisible Ink

Spies work hard to collect information. Then they have to protect that information so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. One of the oldest spy tricks in the book is to use invisible ink - this way, a spy can write information down but it can't be read unless someone knows what they're looking for. The most common form of invisible ink uses UV sensitive ink. Under normal light, the ink is invisible, but when lit by ultraviolet light, the message can be clearly seen and read. If you have access to a UV light and UV sensitive ink, this can be a great way to keep what you know secret!

Magnifying Glasses

Clues can sometimes be small. Magnifying glasses, microscopes, and even binoculars can help spies see details that may otherwise be missed. Spies have used microfiche (small film negatives), tiny printing, or even small messages in pictures. Spies also use tools like telescopes and binoculars to help surveil targets from long distance without being seen. As a spy, always think about the tools you have at your disposal and how they can help you complete your mission!
